#5 Personal Statement

A famous Nike quote once said, “Greatness is earned, never awarded.” Reading this quote made me understand that in order for a person to do something, they have to go out and achieve it. In order for me to get a full-ride scholarship to my college, I have to go and work hard to receive one. I want to get a scholarship because I want it to pay for any college and help me become a physical therapist. Scholarship donors should invest in me because I will succeed in the physical therapist field and in the long term help people from my education.

The first thing students’ think of about a scholarship is money. Money is the first basic priority for any college and many students would want to get free cash. When I think of a scholarship, I also think of the same thing, but I want the money for a good reason. I do not want it just because it’s free, but because I know I will use the money to help myself, family, and my community. Getting a scholarship will save so much money for my family and it will help me further my education to become a physical therapist.

A scholarship will pay for my school and help me in my physical therapist career. I want to become a physical therapist because I want a job that can pay for my living, but also I want to be able to help people from my knowledge. Getting into this health career will enable me to provide treatment to a person’s movement and function throughout their life. Being able to communicate with a patient and then fixing their problem is a job that I want to do every day. At the end of the day I just want a feeling that I have done something to help my community.

The scholarship donors should invest in me because they can trust me with their money. I will do the right thing and I will use it through my education in the correct way. I plan to be successful in the physical therapy field. The scholarship donors should know that once my education is fulfilled, I will give back to the community and help other people because of their help through my schooling.

Furthermore, I plan to become a physical therapist and use this education to assist people. I want the scholarship donors to be able to trust me and know that getting a scholarship is very beneficial to a person’s life. These scholarships will help me pay for my college, help me be in any career, and overall give me a good future. Just like the Nike quote said, “Greatness is earned, never awarded.” I still have to work hard for what I want and do whatever it takes to succeed in my goals and dreams.

Experience with My College Course

“Opportunities to find deeper powers within ourselves come when life seems most challenging.” This quote was said by Joseph Campbell. From his quote I believe what he said about challenges in life are true. Me being in Summer Scholars, my life has been a lot more challenging and difficult then I have ever felt during summer vacation. Even though I did not have to do Summer Scholars, I knew that it would better me for college and overall life. The first week of my college course and meeting my professor was one of the opportunities I have from Summer Scholars.

The college course I am currently taking at UNO is Native American Studies. When the first day of class started, I was not feeling nervous at all, but I was wondering if my professor was going to be difficult or easy going. Then when my professor came into the class, I knew she was going to be nice. The first thing Mrs. Rocha did was open up the windows and let light into the class room. After she opened up the windows, she began to talk about her syllabus. From Mrs. Rocha’s voice I could tell it was very soothing and gentle. I had never had a teacher with such a gentle voice before.

From Mrs. Rocha’s syllabus, I knew the course was going to be a lot different than high school. The course was going to be a semester class packed into a month’s course. From such a small time period, the course is going to be a lot more strenuous and fast. Even though Mrs. Rocha talked about the difficulty of the class I was ready. The things that encouraged me the most to find confident in Native Americans studies were college credit and a head start to college. The things that came as a challenge to me were the reading materials each day and the tests. So far this class has been very fun to learn and Mrs. Rocha is a great professor.

Overall taking a college course is one of my best opportunities from my first week in Summer Scholars. Taking this college course benefits me from being a head start to college than other juniors. Also it gives me a chance to see how college is really like first hand. Through my challenges from Summer Scholars I will try to step up and fight through. Like Joseph Campbell said, Opportunities to find deeper powers within ourselves come when life seems most challenging.”

Residence Life with Summer Scholars

Having the chance to be in Summer Scholars was a great opportunity in my life. In this program we were able to do many different activities that deal with teamwork and leadership. Also we had the chance to take a college course, but overall the purpose of this program was that we were able to experience college life. From Summer Scholars I was able to live with people I did not know and got the chance to meet new friends. I was even able to interact with resident tutor advisors and ask them any questions about college. Doing this program, I feel that I have improved my life and getting ready for college.

One of the many activities involving interacting with people was to live together. I had to reside in a dorm with three other people and we all had to share bathrooms and sinks. Going through this process of living together means communication and helping each other. We all shared different items and supplies if one person does not have it and also we helped each other with homework. Living together in dorms shows how people can act with one another and I was very comfortable with my roommates. We acted like a family.

Doing Summer Scholars also revealed to me that a person can have the chance to meet older friends and talk to people older than myself. I was able to talk to my resident tutor advisors about different subjects involving going through college to regular life problems. Once I was able to get to know more about my RAs I got to be more comfortable with them. From my experience I found out how my classes were and that some of the RAs know some of my own family. So overall going through this program I was able to meet many funny and kind people.
